Hip Hop Syllabus

Hip Hop Workshop

The idea of a hip hop syllabus came about after the BDA became aware of many of the problems teachers and principals were experiencing in their weekly hip hop classes.  It was obvious that students loved learning hip hop and that classes were very popular.  It was also obvious that most teachers were unable to teach this style themselves as this was something that has developed after many of them had finished their own training.  A common complaint was that the teachers with the right choreography were often unreliable and their class lacked structure.  Parents commented that they were not witnessing the same type of development that students achieved in classes that have a syllabus. The BDA were up for a new challenge - to create a hip hop syllabus with all of the latest steps and styles.

A team of collaborators was formed to work closely with teachers, students and principals on the new syllabus.  Milk n Cookies (aka Hilton Dennis and BJ Rorke), Mitch Hicks, Johnny K and Nubia Santos worked with experienced teachers to create the exercises and dances.  The Syllabus includes elements of Commercial Hip Hop, House, Glide, Krump, Lyrical Hip Hop, Tutting, Floor Work , Stepping and lots of other fresh and innovative styles.  The syllabus consists of 4 junior grades and 3 senior grades.

Once the syllabus was complete it was tested in a pilot school on students of different ages and different levels to ensure that the transitions between grades were the right level.  BDA teachers were then invited to a series of workshops to commence learning the new syllabus. Click on the picture below for more photos from the workshop.

Just recently the BDA employed, 'Cinemedia' a professional film production company to film the syllabus and prepare it for distribution.

Promotional and Syllabus DVD's, CD's are now available. We have also begun accepting new schools into the association who would like to take up the syllabus.  Please email bdastagebranch@y7mail.com and leave your studio and postal details to order a copy. The BDA is also able to supply teachers and student teachers who know the syllabus to schools who are interested in developing the syllabus.

We are very excited to have launched this fantastic syllabus to coincide with our 50th year Anniversary celebrations.
